Water Shortage in Botetourt County

Carr Boyd, Botetourt County’s Emergency Manager, verifies the water problem began on Sunday when the wells, which are fueled by electricity, caused everyone who lives in the county to be totally depleted of their normal water supplies.

For some people generators that can get the well pumps running have been implemented while for others they must still cart water from elsewhere, in this case the Lord Botetourt High School Aid Station. Everyone is being asked to limit their use of water as the power is not due to be restored until the weekend.

Eastern States Under a State of Emergency

About two million people along the East Coast are out of power since Friday. It is causing a lot of problems, including large traffic back-ups. Eighteen have died as of July 2, and there’s not enough workers to get the power lines back up. Many of the Eastern states are under a state of emergency.

Red Cross Seeks Volunteers for Cooling Centers

Red Cross is operating 35 cooling centers in Virginia counties to provide power outage relief. With a shortage of volunteers the Red Cross is in need of support for the cooling center operations in Roanoke Valley and Franklin County.

Training is required and will be provided, a background check will be completed, and volunteers must be available throughout the week. Contact the volunteer line 540-525-9029.

EDCO Waste and Recycling Pays Fines for Safety Violations

EDCO Waste and Recycling had to pay Cal/OSHA money for fines because they weren’t up to code with safety violations and it resulted in workers getting hurt. They even had previoius citations and still did not get everything up to code. So since they were aware of the problem they got a willful violation.

Grants available for transitional workers make easy pie out of the heavy work loads some departments try to maintain and workers who are partially disabled. By putting these together everyone benefits.

Employers can modify the available jobs for workers who have work-related injuries or medical claims stemming from work related injuries and help themselves avoid these costly claims.

These ‘transitional’ jobs bridge the gap for the worker as well as he or she will continue to have some sort of income by means of their modified job roles within the same company where they have their most recent experience.

Derecho Storm Endangers Lives of Sick and Elderly in Record Heat

Workers on the Mid-Atlantic coast are working hard in the heat to remove downed trees and repair power lines. The derecho that raged through the area left over 1 million people without power, and the sick and elderly in grave danger for lack of air conditioning in record heat.

The utility companies are warning residents that it could be at least another week before all the power is restored. Many customers are upset because they think the utility companies should be more prepared for situations like this.
